Solar in BC is worth it when three things line up: your household uses a meaningful amount of electricity, your roof has a good unshaded plane facing roughly south, and you'll own the home long enough for the savings to pass the upfront cost. The factors

What actually decides whether solar pays off

Six factors do most of the work. Four of them are about your property — which is why the honest answer is always 'it depends on your home'.

Your electricity consumption

The single biggest factor. A household using 14,000 kWh a year gets roughly twice the value from the same system as one using 7,000 kWh. High-usage homes — EVs, heat pumps, workshops — often see the strongest economics.

Electricity rates

BC has some of the lowest electricity rates in North America. That's genuinely good news for your bills — and it also means solar payback here is slower than in high-rate regions. Anyone promising otherwise is selling, not advising.

Roof orientation & shading

An unshaded south-facing roof can produce roughly twice the annual electricity of a heavily shaded north-facing one. Orientation and shade decide most of your production before a single panel is installed.

Payback & ownership horizon

In the Okanagan, estimated simple payback commonly lands somewhere in the 10–15 year range — better for high-usage homes with ideal roofs, clearly worse for others. Panels typically last 25–30+ years, so the payoff continues well past break-even — if you stay in the home.

  • — An unshaded south, south-east or south-west roof plane

Panels keep producing

Quality panels are typically warranted for 25 years and commonly keep producing well beyond that, degrading slowly (often under ~0.5% per year).

Rates tend to rise

If electricity rates increase over time, the electricity your system avoids becomes worth more each year — none of which is guaranteed, which is why we model it, not promise it.
